Definition
Let be a function on , or a -periodic function, in a fixed normed space. Let be the error of best approximation of by algebraic, respectively trigonometric, polynomials of degree at most . Constructive function theory is the part of approximation theory that characterizes classes of functions by the behaviour of the sequence as . Its results are of two kinds.
- Direct theorems: a smoothness condition on , often a bound on its modulus of continuity, implies an upper bound for .
- Inverse theorems: an upper bound for implies a smoothness condition on .
Remarks
Example: for -periodic continuous , the uniform norm, and , one has if and only if for some constant and all . The direction from smoothness to the rate is a direct theorem of Jackson type, and the converse is an inverse theorem of Bernstein type.
Non-example: the statement that for every continuous is a result of approximation theory. But it gives no rate and distinguishes no class of functions, so it is not of this kind.
