Definition

Let π ⁣:E→M\pi \colon E \to M be a smooth fiber bundle, let k≥1k \ge 1, and let JkπJ^k\pi be its kk-th jet bundle. A one-form θ\theta on an open set of JkπJ^k\pi is a contact form if (jks)∗θ=0(j^k s)^* \theta = 0 for every local section ss of π\pi. Here jksj^k s is the prolongation of ss, and the pullback is taken where it is defined. The contact distribution, or Cartan distribution, of JkπJ^k\pi is the subbundle 𝒞⊆TJkπ\mathcal{C} \subseteq T J^k\pi of vectors on which every contact form vanishes. The contact forms, or equivalently the distribution 𝒞\mathcal{C}, form the contact structure of JkπJ^k\pi.

Remarks

In adapted coordinates (xi,uα,uIα)(x^i, u^\alpha, u^\alpha_I), the contact forms are the combinations with smooth coefficients of θIα=duIα−∑iuI+iα dxi,0≤∣I∣≤k−1,\theta^\alpha_I = du^\alpha_I - \sum_{i} u^\alpha_{I + i}\, dx^i, \qquad 0 \le \abs{I} \le k - 1, where u∅α=uαu^\alpha_\emptyset = u^\alpha and I+iI + i is the multi-index II with ii added once.

A local section σ\sigma of Jkπ→MJ^k\pi \to M is holonomic, that is, of the form jksj^k s, exactly when σ∗θ=0\sigma^*\theta = 0 for every contact form θ\theta. For k=1k = 1, M=ℝM = \R and one fiber coordinate this is a direct check: if σ(x)=(x,s(x),q(x))\sigma(x) = (x, s(x), q(x)) then σ∗(du−q dx)=(s′(x)−q(x)) dx\sigma^*(du - q\, dx) = (s'(x) - q(x))\, dx, which vanishes exactly when q=s′q = s'.

Example: for π ⁣:ℝ×ℝ→ℝ\pi \colon \R \times \R \to \R, J1π=ℝ3J^1\pi = \R^3 with coordinates (x,u,q)(x, u, q) and θ=du−q dx\theta = du - q\, dx. Then dθ=dx∧dqd\theta = dx \wedge dq and θ∧dθ=du∧dx∧dq≠0\theta \wedge d\theta = du \wedge dx \wedge dq \ne 0. So θ\theta is a contact form in the sense of contact geometry, and J1πJ^1\pi is a contact manifold.

Non-example: on the same space the form dudu is not a contact form. For s(x)=xs(x) = x one gets (j1s)∗du=dx≠0(j^1 s)^* du = dx \ne 0.

For k=1k = 1 and one fiber coordinate, J1πJ^1\pi is a contact manifold for every dim⁡M\dim M, with contact form du−∑iui dxidu - \sum_i u_i\, dx^i. For k>1k > 1 or more than one fiber coordinate, the contact distribution has codimension greater than 11. So it is not a contact structure in the sense of contact geometry, though the name is the same.
