Contingency table
Builds on Partition of a setRandom variable
Definition
Let and be categorical variables with values in and , observed on units. The contingency table of the sample is the matrix , where is the number of units with and . The row totals are , the column totals are , and . A contingency table of variables is defined in the same way as an -way array of counts.
Remarks
The cells correspond to a partition of the sample: each unit is counted in exactly one cell. Example: among people, smoke and exercise, smoke and do not exercise, do not smoke and exercise, and do neither. The table is , with row totals , column totals , and grand total . Non-example: in a survey where people may tick several sports, a table of persons by sport counts some people more than once. Then the cells do not partition the sample, and the entries need not add up to . To test independence, the expected counts are , and Pearson's statistic is . Under independence and for large , it is approximately chi-squared with degrees of freedom.
