Continuous kernel
Definition
Let . A continuous kernel on is a kernel that is a continuous function of the pair on the square .
Remarks
Example: on . On the closed triangle it equals , and on the closed triangle it equals . Both formulas are continuous and agree on the diagonal, so is continuous on the square.
Non-example: for , with any value on the diagonal, is not continuous on , since it is unbounded near the diagonal. It is a weakly singular kernel.
A continuous kernel is bounded, , and uniformly continuous on the compact square. So is continuous for every continuous , and it is bounded by . The same definition is used with replaced by a compact subset of .
