Convex combination
Builds on Vector spaceAffine combination
Definition
Let be a real vector space and let be points of , with . A convex combination of is a point of the form where the real numbers satisfy for each and .
Remarks
Example: in , the point is a convex combination of , and , with weights , , . The weights are nonnegative and add up to , and .
Non-example: uses weights that add up to , so it is an affine combination, but the weight is negative, so it is not a convex combination.
A convex combination of two points is a point with . The same definition works over any ordered field in place of .
