Convex and discrete geometry Definition

Convex set

Builds on Euclidean spaceAffine combination

Definition

A subset SS of ℝn\mathbb{R}^n is convex if for all x,y∈Sx, y \in S and each real number tt with 0≤t≤10 \leq t \leq 1, (1−t) x+t y∈S.(1 - t)\, x + t\, y \in S. That is, SS contains the segment from xx to yy.

Remarks

The same definition works in each real vector space or real affine space. Mathlib's Convex is stated for a module over an ordered semiring. A convex set contains each convex combination ∑iwixi\sum_i w_i x_i of its points, an affine combination with wi≥0w_i \geq 0. The empty set and the whole space are convex. Each intersection of convex sets is convex, but a union of convex sets need not be convex. Balls, half-spaces, lines and triangles with their inside are convex.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
