Coplanarity
Definition
Let be an affine space over a field , with space of translations . A set of points of is coplanar if the vectors , for , span a linear subspace of dimension at most .
Remarks
When has dimension at least , the set is coplanar exactly when some affine plane of contains .
Example: in the points , , and are coplanar. Check: all differences lie in the subspace , which has dimension .
Non-example: the points , , and of are not coplanar. The differences from the origin are the three standard basis vectors, which span a space of dimension .
In , four points are coplanar exactly when the determinant of the matrix with columns , , is zero. Every set of at most three points is coplanar.
