Definition
Let . A -dimensional copula is a function such that there is a random vector with:
- each uniformly distributed on , and
- for all .
So a copula is the restriction to of the joint cumulative distribution function of a random vector with uniform marginals.
Remarks
Example: if are independent and uniform on , then , the independence copula. Example: if with uniform, then . Non-example: on is the joint distribution function of two independent variables with distribution function ; its marginals are not uniform, since , so it is not a copula. Equivalently, is a copula when it is grounded ( if some ), satisfies , and is -increasing (it gives non-negative mass to every box). Every copula satisfies the Fréchet–Hoeffding bounds .
