Definition
Let be a nonnegative integer, let be a real number, and let . The Coulomb wave equation is the linear differential equation Let be Kummer's function and the gamma function. The regular Coulomb wave function is where the Coulomb normalising constant is
Remarks
The function is real, solves the Coulomb wave equation, and satisfies as . The constant is chosen so that as , with phase . The irregular Coulomb wave function is the solution with as . Example: for and , one has and , so Non-example: also solves the equation for and , but it is not a multiple of , since it does not vanish at ; it is . For , , where is the spherical Bessel function of the first kind.
