Definition

Let kk be a perfect field of characteristic p>0p > 0, let W=W(k)W = W(k) be its ring of Witt vectors, and let Wn=W/pnWW_n = W/p^n W. Let XX be a scheme that is smooth and proper over kk. A divided power structure on an ideal II of a ring is a family of maps γm ⁣:I→I\gamma_m \colon I \to I, m≥1m \ge 1, with the identities of x↦xm/m!x \mapsto x^m/m!. The ideal pWnpW_n of WnW_n has a canonical one. The crystalline site Cris(X/Wn)\mathrm{Cris}(X/W_n) is the site defined as follows.

  1. Its objects are triples (U,T,δ)(U, T, \delta) with U⊂XU \subset X Zariski open and U↪TU \hookrightarrow T a closed immersion into a WnW_n-scheme TT with ideal II. Here δ\delta is a divided power structure on II compatible with the one on pWnpW_n.
  2. Its morphisms are pairs of compatible maps U→U′U \to U' and T→T′T \to T' that respect the divided powers.
  3. Its coverings are the families {(Ui,Ti,δi)→(U,T,δ)}\set{(U_i, T_i, \delta_i) \to (U, T, \delta)} in which the maps Ti→TT_i \to T are open immersions that cover TT.

The structure sheaf 𝒪X/Wn\mathcal{O}_{X/W_n} sends (U,T,δ)(U, T, \delta) to Γ(T,𝒪T)\Gamma(T, \mathcal{O}_T). The crystalline cohomology of XX is Hcrisi(X/W)=lim←⁡nHi(Cris(X/Wn),𝒪X/Wn),H^i_{\mathrm{cris}}(X/W) = \varprojlim_n H^i\big(\mathrm{Cris}(X/W_n), \mathcal{O}_{X/W_n}\big), an inverse limit of sheaf cohomology groups on these sites.

Remarks

Each Hcrisi(X/W)H^i_{\mathrm{cris}}(X/W) is a finitely generated WW-module, and it vanishes for i>2dim⁡Xi > 2 \dim X. If 𝔛\mathfrak{X} is a smooth proper scheme over WW with special fiber XX, then Hcrisi(X/W)≅HdRi(𝔛/W)H^i_{\mathrm{cris}}(X/W) \cong H^i_{\mathrm{dR}}(\mathfrak{X}/W), the algebraic de Rham cohomology of the lift. Example: for X=ℙk1X = \mathbb{P}^1_k, the lift ℙW1\mathbb{P}^1_W gives Hcris0≅Hcris2≅WH^0_{\mathrm{cris}} \cong H^2_{\mathrm{cris}} \cong W and Hcris1=0H^1_{\mathrm{cris}} = 0. Non-example: replacing WW by kk, that is, taking only n=1n = 1, gives the de Rham cohomology HdRi(X/k)H^i_{\mathrm{dR}}(X/k). This is a vector space over a field of characteristic pp, so it cannot give coefficients in a field of characteristic 00. After tensoring with the fraction field KK of WW, crystalline cohomology is a Weil cohomology theory, with the Frobenius of XX acting semilinearly.
