Definition
Let and let be knots. A cubic spline with these knots is a function such that:
- for each , the restriction of to is a polynomial function of degree at most ;
- is twice continuously differentiable on .
A cubic spline is natural if moreover .
Remarks
This is the spline of degree . Writing for the piece on , clause 2 says that , and for , where is the derivative. The cubic splines with fixed knots form a vector space of dimension . Given values at all knots, there is exactly one natural cubic spline taking them.
Example: knots and for , for . At both pieces have value, first derivative and second derivative , so is a cubic spline. It is not natural, since .
Non-example: on with the knots satisfies clause 1, since its pieces and are polynomials. It fails clause 2: its first derivative jumps from to at .
