Definition
Let and be integers. The moment curve in is the map , . Let be real numbers. The cyclic polytope is the convex hull of the points .
Remarks
is a -dimensional convex polytope whose vertices are all points . Its face lattice does not depend on the choice of , so names a well-defined combinatorial type. Gale's evenness condition describes its facets. A set of indices gives a facet if and only if, for any two indices outside , an even number of elements of lie between them.
Example: for the moment curve is the parabola , and is a convex -gon. Its facets are the edges and , and these are exactly the pairs passing the evenness condition.
Non-example: the regular octahedron is not of the form . In the vertex lies in edges, while every vertex of the octahedron lies in edges.
