Definition
Let be a right circular cone in with vertex . Let be a plane not through that meets in a conic section . A Dandelin sphere of and is a sphere such that:
- is tangent to along a circle, that is, is inscribed in ;
- is tangent to the plane at one point.
Remarks
When is an ellipse there are exactly two Dandelin spheres, one on each side of . For a hyperbola there are two, one in each nappe, and for a parabola there is one. Check of the focal property for an ellipse: let touch at and touch along circles . For , the generator line meets and at points . Two tangent segments from to the same sphere have the same length, so and . Hence , which is the distance between the parallel circles and measured along a generator, the same for all ; so is an ellipse with foci . When is not a circle, the plane of each circle meets in a line, which is the directrix belonging to the focus . Non-example: take a small sphere inscribed in near the vertex, on the vertex side of and far from it. It is tangent to along a circle but does not touch , so clause 2 fails.
