Definition

Let PP be a polyhedron in ℝ3\R^3. For each edge ee of PP, let ℓ(e)\ell(e) be its length and let θ(e)\theta(e) be the dihedral angle of PP at ee. The Dehn invariant of PP is the element D(P)=∑eℓ(e)⊗θ(e)D(P) = \sum_{e} \ell(e) \otimes \theta(e) of the tensor product ℝ⊗ℤ(ℝ/πℤ)\R \otimes_\Z (\R / \pi\Z) of abelian groups. The sum runs over all edges of PP.

Remarks

Example: for the cube of side aa, every dihedral angle is π/2\pi/2. So each edge gives a⊗π/2=(a/2)⊗π=0a \otimes \pi/2 = (a/2) \otimes \pi = 0, and D(cube)=0D(\text{cube}) = 0. A polyhedron with nonzero invariant: the regular tetrahedron of side aa has dihedral angle arccos⁡(1/3)\arccos(1/3), which is not a rational multiple of π\pi. Its invariant 6a⊗arccos⁡(1/3)6a \otimes \arccos(1/3) is not 00, since ℝ⊗ℤ(ℝ/πℤ)\R \otimes_\Z (\R/\pi\Z) is isomorphic to the ℚ\Q-vector space ℝ⊗ℚ(ℝ/ℚπ)\R \otimes_\Q (\R/\Q\pi). The invariant is additive: if PP is cut into polyhedra P1,…,PkP_1, \dots, P_k, then D(P)=D(P1)+⋯+D(Pk)D(P) = D(P_1) + \cdots + D(P_k).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
