Definition
Let be a metric space and let be a continuous map. The map is chaotic in the sense of Devaney if:
- is topologically transitive.
- The set of periodic points of is dense in .
- has sensitive dependence on initial conditions: there is such that each and admit and as follows. They satisfy and .
Remarks
Banks, Brooks, Cairns, Davis and Stacey showed that if is infinite, then conditions 1 and 2 imply condition 3. Example: the doubling map on the circle . It is transitive, since maps any arc of length greater than onto the whole circle. Its periodic points are the points , which are dense. It is sensitive with : for close to , the distance between and doubles at each step while it is below , so it eventually exceeds . Non-example: the rotation with irrational is transitive but has no periodic points, so condition 2 fails; it is also not sensitive, being an isometry.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
