Definition
Let be a commutative ring. A dg category over is a category enriched over the monoidal category of cochain complexes of -modules. In detail, for objects of there is a chain complex of -modules with differential of degree , such that:
- For objects there are -bilinear composition maps , written .
- Composition is associative.
- Each object has an identity with , which is a unit for composition.
- The Leibniz rule holds: for and .
Clauses 1 and 4 say that composition is a map of complexes .
Remarks
Example: the dg category has as objects the cochain complexes of -modules, with . For of degree the differential is . One checks , because the two middle terms cancel, and the Leibniz rule follows from the same sign computation. The closed morphisms of degree are the chain maps, and the exact ones are the null-homotopic chain maps.
Non-example: over , use the same graded maps but drop the sign, so . Then . Let be the complex with and differential the identity, and let be the identity map . Then is on , so is not a complex.
A dg category with one object is the same as a differential graded algebra.
