Associative rings and algebras Definition
Differential graded algebra
Definition
Let be a commutative ring. Let be a graded associative algebra over , so that ; for write . A differential graded algebra is such an with a -linear map such that:
- for all .
- .
- for all homogeneous and all .
Remarks
This is the cohomological convention; in the homological convention lowers the degree by one. The cohomology is a graded algebra, because clause 3 makes a subalgebra and a two-sided ideal of it. Example: let be a field, , , and otherwise, with . Put on and on . Clauses 1 and 2 are clear, and clause 3 reduces to the product rule ; for , both sides are since . Non-example: in the same algebra put instead. Clauses 1 and 2 hold, but clause 3 fails: while . Every graded algebra with is a differential graded algebra.
