Definition

Let (I,≀)(I, \le) be a nonempty directed set. A directed system of algebras over II consists of algebras 𝐀i\mathbf{A}_i of one signature, for i∈Ii \in I, and homomorphisms fij ⁣:𝐀i→𝐀jf_{ij} \colon \mathbf{A}_i \to \mathbf{A}_j for i≀ji \le j, such that:

  1. fiif_{ii} is the identity of 𝐀i\mathbf{A}_i for each ii;
  2. fjk∘fij=fikf_{jk} \circ f_{ij} = f_{ik} whenever i≀j≀ki \le j \le k.

On the disjoint union of the universes, let a∼ba \sim b for a∈Aia \in A_i and b∈Ajb \in A_j when fik(a)=fjk(b)f_{ik}(a) = f_{jk}(b) for some kβ‰₯i,jk \ge i, j. The direct limit lim→⁑𝐀i\varinjlim \mathbf{A}_i has as universe the set of classes [a][a] of this equivalence relation. For an nn-ary operation ff and am∈Aima_m \in A_{i_m}, choose kβ‰₯i1,…,ink \ge i_1, \dots, i_n and put f([a1],…,[an])=[f𝐀k(fi1k(a1),…,fink(an))]f([a_1], \dots, [a_n]) = [f^{\mathbf{A}_k}(f_{i_1 k}(a_1), \dots, f_{i_n k}(a_n))].

Remarks

The relation ∼\sim is transitive and the operations do not depend on the choices of kk and representatives, because II is directed and the fijf_{ij} are homomorphisms. For a nullary operation cc, take any k∈Ik \in I and put c=[c𝐀k]c = [c^{\mathbf{A}_k}]. The maps a↦[a]a \mapsto [a] are homomorphisms 𝐀iβ†’lim→⁑𝐀i\mathbf{A}_i \to \varinjlim \mathbf{A}_i, and they make the direct limit a colimit of the system.

Example: let 𝐀n=β„€/pnβ„€\mathbf{A}_n = \Z/p^n\Z for nβ‰₯1n \ge 1, with fnm(x)=pmβˆ’nxf_{nm}(x) = p^{m-n} x for n≀mn \le m. These maps are injective homomorphisms satisfying clauses 1 and 2, and the direct limit is the PrΓΌfer pp-group.

Non-example: over I=β„•I = \N, take 𝐀n=β„€\mathbf{A}_n = \Z for all nn with fnm(x)=2xf_{nm}(x) = 2x for all n<mn < m and fnn=id⁑f_{nn} = \id. Clause 2 fails, since f12∘f01(x)=4xf_{12} \circ f_{01}(x) = 4x while f02(x)=2xf_{02}(x) = 2x. Setting instead fnm(x)=2mβˆ’nxf_{nm}(x) = 2^{m-n} x gives a directed system with direct limit β„€[1/2]\Z[1/2].
