Definition
Let be a directed set: a nonempty preordered set in which any two elements have a common upper bound. A directed system of rings over consists of rings for and ring homomorphisms for , such that:
- is the identity of for every .
- whenever .
On the disjoint union , let and be equivalent if for some with and . The direct limit is the set of equivalence classes . For and , choose and set and .
Remarks
These operations do not depend on the choices, and they make a ring; the maps , , are ring homomorphisms with . It is the direct limit of the system in the category of rings: for every ring and homomorphisms with , there is exactly one homomorphism with . Example: let , and let be the inclusion for . The direct limit is the polynomial ring in countably many variables, since each polynomial involves only finitely many variables. This ring is not Noetherian, although every is, as the chain of ideals shows. Non-example: if is not directed, say two incomparable indices with rings and and no common upper bound. Then the sum for and is not defined, and the construction does not give a ring. A direct limit of fields is a field, and a direct limit of local rings along local homomorphisms is a local ring.
