Directional statistics
Definition
Let and let be the unit sphere. Directional statistics is the statistics of data with values in . More generally the data may lie in a compact manifold such as a rotation group. For it is called circular statistics. Its basic statistics come from the resultant vector .
- The mean resultant length is , a number in .
- If , the mean direction is .
- For , the circular variance is .
Remarks
Example: the angles and give the unit vectors and . Their sum is , so the mean direction is and . Non-example: for the angles and , , so the mean direction is not defined; then and the circular variance is . The value is close to when the directions are concentrated, and close to when they are spread out or balanced. The mean direction is the point that maximises , so it does not depend on the choice of a zero angle.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
