Definition

Let Ω⊂ℝd\Omega \subset \R^d be a bounded polygonal domain and let F ⁣:ℝ→ℝdF \colon \R \to \R^d be a C1C^1 flux. Consider the scalar conservation law ut+∇⋅F(u)=0u_t + \nabla \cdot F(u) = 0 on Ω\Omega. Let 𝒯h\mathcal{T}_h be a mesh of Ω\Omega and k≥0k \ge 0 an integer. Let VhV_h be the functions that are polynomials of degree at most kk on each element KK, with no continuity condition between elements. Let H^(a,b,n)\hat H(a, b, n) be a numerical flux, such as a Riemann solver, with H^(a,a,n)=F(a)⋅n\hat H(a, a, n) = F(a) \cdot n and H^(a,b,n)=−H^(b,a,−n)\hat H(a, b, n) = -\hat H(b, a, -n). The discontinuous Galerkin method seeks uh(t)∈Vhu_h(t) \in V_h such that, for every K∈𝒯hK \in \mathcal{T}_h and every polynomial vv of degree at most kk on KK, ∫K∂tuh v dx−∫KF(uh)⋅∇v dx+∫∂KH^(uh−,uh+,nK) v ds=0.\int_K \partial_t u_h \, v \, dx - \int_K F(u_h) \cdot \nabla v \, dx + \int_{\partial K} \hat H(u_h^-, u_h^+, n_K) \, v \, ds = 0. Here nKn_K is the outward unit normal of KK, and uh−u_h^- and uh+u_h^+ are the traces of uhu_h from inside and outside KK.

Remarks

The equation is the weak form on one element, obtained by multiplying by vv and integrating by parts once. The boundary flux F(u)⋅nKF(u) \cdot n_K is replaced by H^\hat H, because uhu_h has two values on ∂K\partial K. Since the test functions live on one element, the mass matrix is block diagonal and explicit time stepping is cheap. Taking v=1v = 1 on KK shows that the integral of uhu_h over KK changes only through the fluxes on ∂K\partial K.

Example: for k=0k = 0 and d=1d = 1, with cells KiK_i of width Δx\Delta x, uh=uiu_h = u_i on KiK_i. Here ∇v=0\nabla v = 0, and the conservation property of H^\hat H turns the flux on the left face into −H^(ui−1,ui)-\hat H(u_{i-1}, u_i), with H^(a,b)\hat H(a, b) short for H^(a,b,+1)\hat H(a, b, +1). The equation reads Δx ui′+H^(ui,ui+1)−H^(ui−1,ui)=0\Delta x \, u_i' + \hat H(u_i, u_{i+1}) - \hat H(u_{i-1}, u_i) = 0, a finite volume scheme.

Non-example: the continuous Galerkin method with continuous piecewise polynomials uses a space with continuity across elements and no numerical flux. It does not have the element-by-element form above.
