Discrete Laplace operator
Builds on FunctionLaplacian matrix
Definition
Let and let be the standard unit vectors of . The discrete Laplace operator sends a function to the function given by More generally, let a graph have vertex set , and let every vertex have finitely many neighbours. Then the operator sends to where means that and are joined by an edge.
Remarks
Example: on , the function has everywhere, matching in the plane. The function has , so it is discrete harmonic.
Non-example of a discrete harmonic function: on has .
On a grid of mesh one uses , which tends to the Laplacian of as when is a smooth function sampled on the grid. On a finite graph with Laplacian matrix , one has when is written as a column vector. Some authors use the opposite sign or divide by the degree.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
