Definition

Consider the system of ordinary differential equations sm⁡′(z)=cm⁡(z)2,cm⁡′(z)=−sm⁡(z)2,\operatorname{sm}'(z) = \operatorname{cm}(z)^2, \qquad \operatorname{cm}'(z) = -\operatorname{sm}(z)^2, with initial values sm⁡(0)=0\operatorname{sm}(0) = 0 and cm⁡(0)=1\operatorname{cm}(0) = 1. The Dixon elliptic functions sm⁡\operatorname{sm} and cm⁡\operatorname{cm} are its unique solution near z=0z = 0, continued by analytic continuation to meromorphic functions on ℂ\C.

Remarks

The derivative of sm⁡3+cm⁡3\operatorname{sm}^3 + \operatorname{cm}^3 is 3sm⁡2cm⁡2−3cm⁡2sm⁡2=03\operatorname{sm}^2\operatorname{cm}^2 - 3\operatorname{cm}^2\operatorname{sm}^2 = 0, so sm⁡3+cm⁡3=1\operatorname{sm}^3 + \operatorname{cm}^3 = 1 everywhere: the point (cm⁡z,sm⁡z)(\operatorname{cm} z, \operatorname{sm} z) lies on the Fermat cubic x3+y3=1x^3 + y^3 = 1. Hence sm⁡′=(1−sm⁡3)2/3\operatorname{sm}' = (1 - \operatorname{sm}^3)^{2/3} near 00, and sm⁡\operatorname{sm} is the inverse of x↦∫0xdt/(1−t3)2/3x \mapsto \int_0^x dt/(1 - t^3)^{2/3} near 00. Both functions are elliptic, with real period π3=3∫01dt(1−t3)2/3=B(1/3,1/3)≈5.29992.\pi_3 = 3\int_0^1 \frac{dt}{(1 - t^3)^{2/3}} = B(1/3, 1/3) \approx 5.29992. Let ω=e2πi/3\omega = e^{2\pi i/3}. Example: f(z)=ω−1sm⁡(ωz)f(z) = \omega^{-1}\operatorname{sm}(\omega z) and g(z)=cm⁡(ωz)g(z) = \operatorname{cm}(\omega z) satisfy f′=g2f' = g^2, g′=−ω3f2=−f2g' = -\omega^3 f^2 = -f^2, f(0)=0f(0) = 0, g(0)=1g(0) = 1; by uniqueness sm⁡(ωz)=ωsm⁡(z)\operatorname{sm}(\omega z) = \omega\operatorname{sm}(z) and cm⁡(ωz)=cm⁡(z)\operatorname{cm}(\omega z) = \operatorname{cm}(z). So ωπ3\omega\pi_3 is also a period, and the period lattice contains π3(ℤ+ℤω)\pi_3(\Z + \Z\omega). Non-example: sin⁡\sin and cos⁡\cos satisfy sin⁡′=cos⁡\sin' = \cos, not cos⁡2\cos^2, and sin⁡3+cos⁡3\sin^3 + \cos^3 is not constant (it is 11 at 00 and 2−1/22^{-1/2} at π/4\pi/4).
