Definition

Let XX be a complex manifold of complex dimension nn. For integers p,q≥0p, q \ge 0, let Ωp,q(X)\Omega^{p,q}(X) be the space of smooth complex differential forms of type (p,q)(p, q). In each holomorphic chart (z1,…,zn)(z_1, \ldots, z_n) they are the sums ∑∣I∣=p,∣J∣=qfIJ dzI∧dzˉJ\sum_{\abs{I} = p, \abs{J} = q} f_{IJ} \, dz_I \wedge d\bar z_J with smooth functions fIJf_{IJ}. The exterior derivative maps Ωp,q(X)\Omega^{p,q}(X) into Ωp+1,q(X)⊕Ωp,q+1(X)\Omega^{p+1,q}(X) \oplus \Omega^{p,q+1}(X). The Dolbeault operator ∂ˉ ⁣:Ωp,q(X)→Ωp,q+1(X)\bar\partial \colon \Omega^{p,q}(X) \to \Omega^{p,q+1}(X) is dd followed by the projection onto Ωp,q+1(X)\Omega^{p,q+1}(X).

Remarks

In a chart, with the Wirtinger derivatives ∂/∂zˉk=12(∂/∂xk+i ∂/∂yk)\partial / \partial \bar z_k = \frac{1}{2}(\partial / \partial x_k + i \, \partial / \partial y_k) for zk=xk+iykz_k = x_k + i y_k, ∂ˉ(∑I,JfIJ dzI∧dzˉJ)=∑I,J∑k=1n∂fIJ∂zˉk dzˉk∧dzI∧dzˉJ.\bar\partial \Bigl(\sum_{I, J} f_{IJ} \, dz_I \wedge d\bar z_J\Bigr) = \sum_{I, J} \sum_{k=1}^n \frac{\partial f_{IJ}}{\partial \bar z_k} \, d\bar z_k \wedge dz_I \wedge d\bar z_J. The other component of dd is written ∂\partial, so d=∂+∂ˉd = \partial + \bar\partial, and d2=0d^2 = 0 gives ∂ˉ2=0\bar\partial^2 = 0, ∂2=0\partial^2 = 0 and ∂∂ˉ+∂ˉ∂=0\partial \bar\partial + \bar\partial \partial = 0. The splitting of dd into two components uses that the complex structure comes from holomorphic charts. The cohomology of ∂ˉ\bar\partial on Ωp,∙(X)\Omega^{p, \bullet}(X) is the Dolbeault cohomology H∂ˉp,q(X)H^{p,q}_{\bar\partial}(X), and the same construction works for forms with values in a holomorphic vector bundle.

Example: on X=ℂX = \C with coordinate zz, let f(z)=z2f(z) = z^2. Then ∂f/∂zˉ=0\partial f / \partial \bar z = 0, so ∂ˉf=0\bar\partial f = 0, as for every holomorphic function.

Non-example: the function g(z)=zˉg(z) = \bar z on ℂ\C is not holomorphic, and indeed ∂ˉg=∂zˉ∂zˉ dzˉ=dzˉ≠0\bar\partial g = \frac{\partial \bar z}{\partial \bar z} \, d\bar z = d\bar z \ne 0.
