Definition

Consider a finite-horizon optimal control problem on [0,T][0, T] with dynamics y′=f(s,y,u)y' = f(s, y, u), controls with values in a set UU, running cost LL and terminal cost gg. Let VV be its value function. The dynamic programming principle for the problem is the identity, for all 0≤t≤s≤T0 \le t \le s \le T and x∈ℝnx \in \R^n, V(t,x)=inf⁡u(∫tsL(r,y(r),u(r)) dr+V(s,y(s))).V(t, x) = \inf_{u} \Big( \int_t^s L(r, y(r), u(r)) \, dr + V(s, y(s)) \Big). Here the infimum is over measurable controls u ⁣:[t,s]→Uu \colon [t, s] \to U, and yy is the trajectory with y(t)=xy(t) = x. Dynamic programming in continuous time is the method that derives from this principle a partial differential equation for VV. That equation is the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation Vt+min⁡u∈U(L(t,x,u)+∇xV⋅f(t,x,u))=0V_t + \min_{u \in U} \big( L(t, x, u) + \nabla_x V \cdot f(t, x, u) \big) = 0 with V(T,x)=g(x)V(T, x) = g(x). One then obtains optimal controls by choosing, at each (t,x)(t, x), a minimizer uu of this expression.

Remarks

The principle holds under the standing hypotheses of the value function: UU compact, ff continuous and Lipschitz in the state, and LL, gg continuous. Its proof splits a control on [t,T][t, T] into its parts on [t,s][t, s] and [s,T][s, T]. Example: for y′=uy' = u, U=[−1,1]U = [-1, 1], L=0L = 0 and g(x)=∣x∣g(x) = \abs{x}, the value function is V(t,x)=max⁡(∣x∣−(T−t),0)V(t, x) = \max(\abs{x} - (T - t), 0). Where ∣x∣>T−t\abs{x} > T - t it equals ∣x∣−(T−t)\abs{x} - (T - t), so Vt=1V_t = 1 and min⁡∣u∣≤1Vxu=−1\min_{\abs{u} \le 1} V_x u = -1, and the equation holds. The minimizer u=−sgn⁡(x)u = -\sgn(x) is the optimal feedback. Non-example: a greedy rule that minimizes only the running cost LL at each instant, ignoring VV, does not follow the principle and is in general not optimal.
