Dynamical Mordell–Lang conjecture

Statement
Let be a quasi-projective variety over and let be a morphism. Write for the -th iterate of , with . Let be a closed subvariety and let . Then the set is a finite union of sets of the form with .
Remarks
A set with is the single point , so finite sets are allowed. An equivalent form concerns the orbit of . If the orbit meets in infinitely many points, then contains a positive-dimensional subvariety with for some and for some . The conjecture is open in general. Bell, Ghioca and Tucker proved it when is étale. When and is linear, it is the Skolem–Mahler–Lech theorem on the zeros of a linear recurrence. When is a translation on a semiabelian variety, it follows from the Mordell–Lang theorem of Faltings and Vojta, which gives the name. The main tool is -adic. On suitable residue classes of , the map is interpolated by a -adic analytic function. A nonzero analytic function on has finitely many zeros. Over fields of positive characteristic the statement fails. For example, over let on , let be the line and start at . Then lies in exactly when , that is, when is a power of .
