Dynamical systems and ergodic theory Definition
Dynamical system
Definition
Let be an additive monoid, the time, usually , , or . Let be a set, the phase space or state space. A dynamical system with time on is a map such that:
- for every ;
- for all and .
The map is the time- map, and the set is the orbit of .
Remarks
Clauses 1 and 2 say that is a monoid homomorphism from to the maps under composition, that is, an action of on . In practice carries more structure, and is required to respect it. Examples are continuous maps on a topological space, smooth maps on a manifold, or measurable maps on a measure space. With the system is a flow, with a semiflow, and with or a discrete-time system.
Example: , and , the solutions of . Clause 1 holds since , and clause 2 holds since .
Non-example: on with . Clause 1 holds, but while , so clause 2 fails.

What this page needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
