Edge colouring

Definition

Let GG be a graph with edge set EE, and let CC be a set of colours. An edge colouring of GG is a function c:E→Cc : E \to C such that c(e)≠c(e′)c(e) \neq c(e') for any two distinct edges ee and e′e' with a common end. The chromatic index χ′(G)\chi'(G) is the smallest number of colours in an edge colouring of a finite graph GG.

Remarks

Each colour class is a matching. Thus an edge colouring is a partition of the edges into matchings. The edges at a vertex need different colours, so χ′(G)≥Δ(G)\chi'(G) \ge \Delta(G). Vizing's theorem of 1964 says that a simple graph has χ′(G)=Δ(G)\chi'(G) = \Delta(G) or χ′(G)=Δ(G)+1\chi'(G) = \Delta(G) + 1.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
