Einstein–Hilbert action
Builds on Lorentzian manifoldScalar curvature
Definition
Let be a smooth oriented -manifold, and let be a Lorentzian metric on of signature . Let be the scalar curvature of , and let be its volume form in local coordinates . Let be Newton's gravitational constant, the speed of light, and . For a compact region , the Einstein–Hilbert action of on is
Remarks
Let be a variation of the metric supported in the interior of . Write . Then where is the Ricci tensor; the term with the variation of is a divergence and drops out. So is a critical point of for all such variations if and only if , the vacuum Einstein field equations. Example: Minkowski space with is flat, so its Ricci tensor vanishes, and it is a critical point. Non-example: the Euclidean metric is not Lorentzian, so the definition above does not apply to it; the analogous Riemannian functional is a different object. With a cosmological constant one replaces by . Adding a matter action and setting gives . On a region with boundary, one adds the Gibbons–Hawking–York boundary term to obtain a well-posed variational problem with the metric fixed on the boundary.
