Elliptic gamma function

Builds on q-Pochhammer symbol

Definition

Let p,qp, q be complex numbers with ∣p∣<1\abs{p} < 1 and ∣q∣<1\abs{q} < 1. For z∈ℂ∖{0}z \in \C \setminus \set{0} with pjqkz≠1p^j q^k z \ne 1 for all integers j,k≥0j, k \ge 0, the elliptic gamma function is Γ(z;p,q)=∏j,k≥01−pj+1qk+1/z1−pjqkz.\Gamma(z; p, q) = \prod_{j, k \ge 0} \frac{1 - p^{j+1} q^{k+1} / z}{1 - p^j q^k z}.

Remarks

With the theta function θ(z;p)=(z;p)∞ (p/z;p)∞\theta(z; p) = (z; p)_\infty\, (p/z; p)_\infty, built from the q-Pochhammer symbol (a;p)∞=∏j≥0(1−apj)(a; p)_\infty = \prod_{j \ge 0}(1 - a p^j), the function satisfies Γ(qz;p,q)=θ(z;p) Γ(z;p,q).\Gamma(qz; p, q) = \theta(z; p)\, \Gamma(z; p, q). Check: in the quotient Γ(qz)/Γ(z)\Gamma(qz)/\Gamma(z) all factors cancel except the factors with k=0k = 0, which give ∏j≥0(1−pj+1/z)(1−pjz)=θ(z;p)\prod_{j \ge 0}(1 - p^{j+1}/z)(1 - p^j z) = \theta(z; p).

Example: replacing zz by pq/zpq/z exchanges the numerator and the denominator of the product, so Γ(z;p,q) Γ(pq/z;p,q)=1\Gamma(z; p, q)\, \Gamma(pq/z; p, q) = 1.

Non-example of a valid argument: z=1z = 1 makes the factor 1−p0q0z1 - p^0 q^0 z vanish, so Γ(z;p,q)\Gamma(z; p, q) has a pole at z=1z = 1.

The function is symmetric in pp and qq.
