Definition

Let R(x,y)R(x, y) be a rational function of two variables, and let PP be a polynomial of degree 33 or 44 with no repeated roots. An elliptic integral is an integral of the form f(x)=∫cxR(t,P(t)) dt,f(x) = \int_c^x R\big(t, \sqrt{P(t)}\big) \, dt, where cc is a constant and ⋅\sqrt{\cdot} is a square root.

Let 0≤k<10 \le k < 1, let φ\varphi be real, and let nn be a real parameter with nsin⁡2θ≠1n \sin^2\theta \ne 1 for θ\theta between 00 and φ\varphi. The incomplete elliptic integrals in Legendre form of the first, second and third kind are F(φ,k)=∫0φdθ1−k2sin⁡2θ,E(φ,k)=∫0φ1−k2sin⁡2θ dθ,F(\varphi, k) = \int_0^\varphi \frac{d\theta}{\sqrt{1 - k^2 \sin^2\theta}}, \qquad E(\varphi, k) = \int_0^\varphi \sqrt{1 - k^2 \sin^2\theta} \, d\theta, Π(n;φ,k)=∫0φdθ(1−nsin⁡2θ)1−k2sin⁡2θ.\Pi(n; \varphi, k) = \int_0^\varphi \frac{d\theta}{(1 - n \sin^2\theta)\sqrt{1 - k^2 \sin^2\theta}}. The number kk is the modulus.

Remarks

The substitution t=sin⁡θt = \sin\theta turns F(φ,k)F(\varphi, k) into ∫0sin⁡φdt/(1−t2)(1−k2t2)\int_0^{\sin\varphi} dt / \sqrt{(1 - t^2)(1 - k^2 t^2)}, an elliptic integral with P(t)=(1−t2)(1−k2t2)P(t) = (1 - t^2)(1 - k^2 t^2), which has the four distinct roots ±1\pm 1 and ±1/k\pm 1/k when 0<k<10 < k < 1. Example: the ellipse x=asin⁡θx = a\sin\theta, y=bcos⁡θy = b\cos\theta with 0<b<a0 < b < a has arc length element a2cos⁡2θ+b2sin⁡2θ dθ=a1−e2sin⁡2θ dθ\sqrt{a^2\cos^2\theta + b^2\sin^2\theta}\,d\theta = a\sqrt{1 - e^2\sin^2\theta}\,d\theta, where e2=1−b2/a2e^2 = 1 - b^2/a^2; so its arc length from θ=0\theta = 0 to θ=φ\theta = \varphi is aE(φ,e)a E(\varphi, e). Non-example: ∫0xdt/1−t2=arcsin⁡x\int_0^x dt / \sqrt{1 - t^2} = \arcsin x is not an elliptic integral, since P(t)=1−t2P(t) = 1 - t^2 has degree 22. Every elliptic integral is a sum of elementary functions and constant multiples of integrals of the three Legendre kinds. The values at φ=π/2\varphi = \pi/2 are the complete integrals K(k)=F(π/2,k)K(k) = F(\pi/2, k), of the first kind, and E(k)=E(π/2,k)E(k) = E(\pi/2, k), of the second kind.
