Definition

Let MM be a compact smooth manifold without boundary, and let EE and FF be smooth vector bundles over MM. Let P ⁣:Γ(E)→Γ(F)P \colon \Gamma(E) \to \Gamma(F) be a differential operator of order mm with principal symbol σm(P)\sigma_m(P). The operator PP is elliptic if the linear map σm(P)(x,ξ) ⁣:Ex→Fx\sigma_m(P)(x, \xi) \colon E_x \to F_x is invertible for every x∈Mx \in M and every nonzero ξ∈Tx∗M\xi \in T^*_x M.

Remarks

When dim⁡M≥1\dim M \ge 1, the condition forces EE and FF to have the same rank, since an invertible linear map exists only between spaces of equal dimension. On an open subset of ℝn\R^n with EE and FF trivial of rank 11, it is the usual condition for an elliptic operator.

Example: let (M,g)(M, g) be a closed Riemannian manifold and let Δ=−div⁡grad⁡\Delta = -\operatorname{div} \operatorname{grad} be the Laplace–Beltrami operator on functions. Its principal symbol is σ2(Δ)(x,ξ)=−∣ξ∣g2\sigma_2(\Delta)(x, \xi) = -\abs{\xi}_g^2, which is a nonzero number for ξ≠0\xi \ne 0, so Δ\Delta is elliptic.

Non-example: on a closed manifold MM of dimension n≥2n \ge 2, the exterior derivative dd from functions to 11-forms is not elliptic. Its symbol at ξ\xi is the map ℝ→Tx∗M\R \to T^*_x M, c↦c ξc \mapsto c \, \xi, which is injective but not surjective, since Tx∗MT^*_x M has dimension n>1n > 1.
