Endomorphism monoid
Definition
Let be a structure with domain . An endomorphism of is a homomorphism from to . Let be the set of endomorphisms of , let be composition and let be the identity map of . The endomorphism monoid of is the monoid .
Remarks
The composite of two homomorphisms is a homomorphism and is a homomorphism, so is closed under and contains ; composition is associative.
Example: let . Each endomorphism satisfies for all , by induction on and . So is an isomorphism from to the monoid , since .
Non-example: the map lies in the monoid of all maps but not in , because it sends to .
The invertible elements of are the automorphisms of .
