Energy functional on paths

Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a Riemannian manifold and let a<ba < b. For a continuous, piecewise smooth path ω ⁣:[a,b]→M\omega \colon [a, b] \to M, the energy of ω\omega is E(ω)=12∫abg(ω˙(t),ω˙(t)) dt.E(\omega) = \frac{1}{2} \int_a^b g\big(\dot\omega(t), \dot\omega(t)\big) \, dt. For p,q∈Mp, q \in M, the energy functional on paths from pp to qq is the function EE on the set of such paths with ω(a)=p\omega(a) = p and ω(b)=q\omega(b) = q.

Remarks

Some authors omit the factor 12\frac{1}{2}. With the length L(ω)=∫ab∣ω˙∣ dtL(\omega) = \int_a^b \abs{\dot\omega} \, dt, the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality gives L(ω)2≤2(b−a)E(ω)L(\omega)^2 \le 2 (b - a) E(\omega), with equality if and only if ω\omega has constant speed. The critical points of EE among paths with fixed ends are the geodesics from pp to qq parametrized on [a,b][a, b]. A minimizer of EE is a length-minimizing geodesic with constant speed. To apply Morse theory one extends EE to paths of Sobolev class H1H^1, which form a Hilbert manifold.

Example: in ℝn\R^n with the Euclidean metric, the path ω(t)=p+t(q−p)\omega(t) = p + t(q - p) on [0,1][0, 1] has E(ω)=12∣q−p∣2E(\omega) = \frac{1}{2} \abs{q - p}^2, and L(ω)2=2E(ω)L(\omega)^2 = 2 E(\omega), so it has constant speed.

Non-example: the reparametrization σ(t)=p+t2(q−p)\sigma(t) = p + t^2 (q - p) of the same segment has E(σ)=23∣q−p∣2>12∣q−p∣2E(\sigma) = \frac{2}{3} \abs{q - p}^2 > \frac{1}{2} \abs{q - p}^2. It has the same length but is not a critical point of EE, since its speed is not constant.
