Definition
Let be a smooth projective algebraic surface over , with structure sheaf and canonical divisor . is an Enriques surface if:
- , that is, the irregularity is ;
- , that is, the geometric genus is ; and
- is linearly equivalent to .
Remarks
Clauses 2 and 3 together force to be a nonzero element of order in the Picard group, since would give . The double cover defined by is unramified, and is a K3 surface; conversely, the quotient of a K3 surface by a fixed-point-free involution is an Enriques surface. The fundamental group of an Enriques surface is , and its Euler characteristic is . Example: in with coordinates , let be a general intersection of three quadrics , . Then is a K3 surface, and the involution acts on without fixed points. The quotient of by this involution is an Enriques surface. Non-example: a K3 surface satisfies clauses 1 and 3, but it has and so , which fails clause 2. In characteristic the definition is modified, and there are three kinds of Enriques surfaces.
