Combinatorics Ramsey theory Conjecture

Erdős–Hajnal conjecture

Builds on GraphInduced subgraphCliqueIndependent set

Statement

For every finite graph HH there is a constant ε(H)>0\varepsilon(H) > 0 with the following property. Let GG be a graph with nn vertices that has no induced subgraph isomorphic to HH. Then GG has a clique or an independent set with at least nε(H)n^{\varepsilon(H)} vertices.

Remarks

Without the hypothesis on HH, only a logarithmic bound holds. Every graph on nn vertices has a clique or an independent set of size at least 12log⁡2n\tfrac12 \log_2 n, by Ramsey's theorem. Random graphs show that this order log⁡n\log n cannot be improved in general. Erdős and Hajnal proved that excluding HH gives a bound of the form eclog⁡ne^{c\sqrt{\log n}} with c>0c > 0 depending on HH. The conjecture is known for all graphs HH with at most four vertices. For HH the path on four vertices it is easy: such graphs are perfect, so the product of the clique number and the independence number is at least nn. The conjecture is open in general; the path on five vertices was settled only in 2023.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
