Definition

The simple linear errors-in-variables model for observed pairs (xi,yi)(x_i, y_i), i=1,…,ni = 1, \dots, n, states that yi=α+βξi+εi,xi=ξi+ηi,y_i = \alpha + \beta \xi_i + \varepsilon_i, \qquad x_i = \xi_i + \eta_i, where:

  1. α,β∈ℝ\alpha, \beta \in \R are unknown parameters;
  2. ξi\xi_i is the true value of the regressor, which is not observed;
  3. εi\varepsilon_i and ηi\eta_i are random errors with mean 00, and ηi\eta_i is the measurement error of the regressor.

The multivariate version replaces βξi\beta \xi_i by βTξi\beta^T \xi_i with ξi,ηi∈ℝp\xi_i, \eta_i \in \R^p.

Remarks

Assume that the ξi\xi_i are independent and identically distributed with variance σξ2>0\sigma_\xi^2 > 0, and that the ηi\eta_i have variance ση2\sigma_\eta^2. Assume also that all the ξi\xi_i, ηi\eta_i, εi\varepsilon_i are independent, with finite variances, that the ηi\eta_i are identically distributed, and that the εi\varepsilon_i are identically distributed. Then Cov⁡(xi,yi)=βσξ2\operatorname{Cov}(x_i, y_i) = \beta \sigma_\xi^2 and Var⁡(xi)=σξ2+ση2\operatorname{Var}(x_i) = \sigma_\xi^2 + \sigma_\eta^2. So the ordinary least squares slope of yy on xx converges in probability to β σξ2σξ2+ση2,\beta \, \frac{\sigma_\xi^2}{\sigma_\xi^2 + \sigma_\eta^2}, which differs from β\beta when β≠0\beta \ne 0 and ση2>0\sigma_\eta^2 > 0; the slope is not consistent.

Example: β=2\beta = 2 and σξ2=ση2=1\sigma_\xi^2 = \sigma_\eta^2 = 1 give the limit 11.

Special case: if ηi=0\eta_i = 0 for all ii, the regressor is observed exactly and the model is ordinary linear regression. Error in the response alone is absorbed into εi\varepsilon_i and does not bias the slope.

With normal ξi\xi_i, ηi\eta_i, εi\varepsilon_i, the parameters are not identified from the joint distribution of (xi,yi)(x_i, y_i) unless extra information is given, such as the ratio σε2/ση2\sigma_\varepsilon^2 / \sigma_\eta^2.
