Definition
Let be a closed smooth manifold of dimension with a smooth positive density, and let be a Hermitian vector bundle over . Let be a formally self-adjoint elliptic differential operator of order on sections of . Its spectrum is a discrete set of real eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. The eta function of is summed over the nonzero eigenvalues counted with multiplicity. It converges for , and it has a meromorphic continuation to that is holomorphic at . The eta invariant of is .
Remarks
The regularity at was proved by Atiyah, Patodi and Singer, with the general case due to Gilkey. Some authors call the reduced eta invariant.
Example: on let with . The eigenfunctions are , , with eigenvalues . So , with the Hurwitz zeta function. Since , the eta invariant is . For the nonzero spectrum is symmetric and .
Non-example: on is elliptic but not self-adjoint; its eigenvalues are imaginary, so has no meaning and has no eta invariant.
