Definition
Let be a morphism of schemes. The morphism is étale if it satisfies the following three conditions.
- is locally of finite presentation: over affine opens , the -algebra is finitely presented.
- is flat.
- is unramified.
Remarks
Let be a field of characteristic not , and let . The morphism given by is étale. The ring is free of rank over the subring with basis , so the map is flat and finitely presented. Its module of relative differentials is generated by with the relation , and is a unit, so it is zero and the map is unramified. The same map on is not étale: at the relation does not kill , so clause 3 fails. Equivalently, an étale morphism is a smooth morphism of relative dimension . The ring version of this notion is an étale morphism of rings.
