Definition

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space and let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a homeomorphism. The map ff is expansive if there is a constant c>0c > 0 such that for all x,y∈Xx, y \in X with x≠yx \neq y there is an integer n∈ℤn \in \Z with d(fn(x),fn(y))>cd(f^n(x), f^n(y)) > c. Such a cc is an expansivity constant of ff.

Remarks

On a compact metric space, expansiveness does not depend on the choice of a metric that gives the topology, although the constant does. Example: the two-sided full shift σ\sigma on {0,1}ℤ\set{0, 1}^{\Z} with d(x,y)=2−min⁡{∣i∣:xi≠yi}d(x, y) = 2^{-\min\set{\abs{i} : x_i \neq y_i}} and c=1/2c = 1/2. If x≠yx \neq y, pick ii with xi≠yix_i \neq y_i; then σi(x)\sigma^i(x) and σi(y)\sigma^i(y) differ at coordinate 00, so their distance is 1>1/21 > 1/2. Non-example: an isometry such as the rotation x↦x+α mod 1x \mapsto x + \alpha \bmod 1 of the circle. For any c>0c > 0, two distinct points at distance less than cc stay at that distance for all n∈ℤn \in \Z. An expansive homeomorphism of a compact metric space has finite topological entropy.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
