Definition
Let be a measurable space with a σ-finite measure , and let be a parametric family of probability measures on it. The family is a -parameter exponential family if there are
- a measurable function ,
- measurable functions ,
- functions ,
such that each has a density with respect to of the form
Remarks
The function is fixed by normalization: . The numbers are the natural parameters, and writing the density in terms of gives the canonical form.
Example: the Bernoulli distribution with parameter , with the counting measure on . Its density is . So it is a -parameter exponential family with , , and .
Non-example: the uniform distributions on for . In an exponential family the set does not depend on , up to a -null set, because the exponential factor is positive. For the uniform family this set is , which moves with , so no choice of , , , works.
