Exponential functions on semigroups

Builds on SemigroupFunction

Definition

Let SS be a semigroup, with its operation written as (x,y)↦xy(x, y) \mapsto xy. An exponential function on SS, or exponential, is a function m ⁣:S→ℂm \colon S \to \C such that m(xy)=m(x) m(y)for all x,y∈S.m(xy) = m(x)\, m(y) \quad \text{for all } x, y \in S.

Remarks

Example: on S=(ℝ,+)S = (\R, +), m(x)=e(1+2i)xm(x) = e^{(1 + 2i) x} is an exponential, since e(1+2i)(x+y)=e(1+2i)xe(1+2i)ye^{(1 + 2i)(x + y)} = e^{(1 + 2i) x} e^{(1 + 2i) y}. Non-example: on S=(ℝ,+)S = (\R, +), m(x)=2exm(x) = 2 e^x is not an exponential, since m(0+0)=2m(0 + 0) = 2 while m(0)m(0)=4m(0) m(0) = 4. The zero function is an exponential; some authors exclude it. If SS is a group and mm is not identically zero, then m(e)=1m(e) = 1, mm never vanishes, and mm is a homomorphism into the multiplicative group ℂ×\C^{\times}. An exponential on an abelian group whose values all have absolute value 11 is a character of the group.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
