Extended finite element method
Summary
The extended finite element method, or XFEM, enriches a standard finite element space with extra functions. These carry known features of the solution, such as a jump across a crack. The enrichment is built with the partition of unity formed by the usual shape functions. So cracks, interfaces and inclusions can cut through elements, and the mesh does not need to follow them. It was developed in fracture mechanics by Ted Belytschko and coworkers, and is often combined with the level-set method to describe the moving crack. See the definition.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
