Definition
Let be a mesh of a domain with nodes , . Let be standard finite element shape functions with on , a partition of unity. Let be an enrichment function that carries a known local feature of the solution. Let be the set of nodes whose shape function support meets the region of that feature. The extended finite element method is the Galerkin method in the space of functions with unknown coefficients and .
Remarks
The extra functions have small support, so the system matrix stays sparse. If all equal one value , then on a region where the enrichment equals exactly. Common choices of are a Heaviside function across a crack, and the singular functions of the crack tip, which behave like . Often one uses the shifted form , so that at the nodes.
Example: on with nodes , let a crack sit at a point inside . Take , with the Heaviside step, and . Then can jump at by , while the mesh does not have a node at .
Non-example: the standard space with only the first sum is continuous on . It has no enrichment, , so it cannot jump at unless is a mesh node and the mesh is split there.
