External direct sum

Builds on Vector space

Definition

Let FF be a field and let (Vi)i∈I(V_i)_{i \in I} be a family of vector spaces over FF. The external direct sum ⨁i∈IVi\bigoplus_{i \in I} V_i is the set of families (vi)i∈I(v_i)_{i \in I} with vi∈Viv_i \in V_i for each ii and vi=0v_i = 0 for all but finitely many ii. It is a vector space over FF with the componentwise operations (vi)i+(wi)i=(vi+wi)i,a(vi)i=(avi)i.(v_i)_i + (w_i)_i = (v_i + w_i)_i, \qquad a (v_i)_i = (a v_i)_i.

Remarks

For finite II, the direct sum equals the product ∏i∈IVi\prod_{i \in I} V_i. For infinite II, it is a proper subspace of the product when infinitely many ViV_i are nonzero. Each VjV_j embeds in the direct sum as the families that are zero outside jj. The direct sum is the internal direct sum of these images. The direct sum of countably many copies of FF is isomorphic to F[x]F[x].
