Definition
Let be a monic polynomial of degree whose filled Julia set is connected. Let be the closed unit disc. By Böttcher's theorem there is a unique conformal map with as . It satisfies . For , the external ray of angle is The ray lands at if as .
Remarks
The relation gives . Example: for , is the closed unit disc and is the identity. So is the half-line , and it lands at . Non-example: for , the spiral is not an external ray, since maps it to a curve whose angle varies. Douady and Hubbard showed that every ray with a rational angle lands, at a periodic or preperiodic point of the Julia set. For the quadratic family, external rays of the Mandelbrot set are defined in the same way, with the conformal map from its complement onto .
