Definition
Let be a real vector space and let be a convex set. A face of is a subset such that:
- is convex;
- is an extreme set of : if and the open segment meets , then .
Remarks
The empty set and are faces of . A one-point set is a face exactly when is an extreme point of . A face of a face of is a face of .
Example: for the square , the edge is a face. It is convex. If a point of lies strictly between , the second coordinates of are at most and average to with positive weights. So both equal , and .
Non-example: the lower half of the same square is convex, but the point lies strictly between and , and , so clause 2 fails.
If is a supporting hyperplane of , then is a face, called an exposed face. Not every face is exposed: in the stadium, the convex hull of two unit discs centred at , the point is a face but not an exposed face.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
