Definition
Let be integers. The factor analysis model with factors for a random vector in is where:
- is a constant vector and is a constant matrix, the matrix of loadings.
- is a random vector in , the common factors, with and covariance matrix .
- is a random vector in , the specific errors, with and diagonal covariance matrix .
- and are uncorrelated.
The factors are not observed; only is. Factor analysis is the estimation of and from observations of , and the interpretation of the factors.
Remarks
The model implies that the covariance matrix of is . Example: with , , and , the covariance matrix has diagonal entries and off-diagonal entries . Non-example: a model with not diagonal fails clause 3; the errors would then carry shared variation that the factors are meant to explain. The loadings are determined only up to rotation: if is a orthogonal matrix, then and give the same . For this reason, rotations such as varimax are chosen to make the loadings easier to interpret. Under normality, and are often estimated by maximum likelihood.
