Definition
Let be an algebra with universe . Let and . A congruence on is a factor congruence when there is a congruence on such that:
- ;
- , where means that and for some .
Then and are called a pair of complementary factor congruences.
Remarks
For such a pair, the map is an isomorphism from onto the direct product . Conversely, if , the kernels of the two projections are complementary factor congruences. The conditions say that and are complements in the congruence lattice and that they permute.
Example: on the group , take to be congruence modulo and congruence modulo . An element congruent to modulo and modulo is , so clause 1 holds. For any there is with and , by the Chinese remainder theorem, so clause 2 holds.
Non-example: on , congruence modulo is not a factor congruence. The congruences of are , congruence modulo , and . Only satisfies clause 1, and then .
The congruences and are always factor congruences, complementary to each other.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
