Factorial experiment
Builds on Design of experiments
Definition
Let and let be finite sets with , the levels of factors . The treatments are the combinations . A full factorial experiment is an experiment whose design applies every one of the combinations to at least one unit. When every , it is a factorial experiment, and the levels are usually coded and .
Remarks
In a experiment with one run per combination and responses , the main effect of factor is the mean of over minus the mean over . The interaction of factors and is half of the difference between the effect of factor at and at . Equivalently, it is the mean of over minus the mean over .
Example: a experiment with factors and and responses , , , , where the first sign is the level of . The main effect of is , and that of is . The interaction is , which also equals .
Non-example: the runs , , change one factor at a time from a baseline. The combination is missing, so this is not a full factorial experiment, and the interaction of and cannot be estimated.
The data of a factorial experiment are usually analysed by analysis of variance, with one sum of squares for each main effect and each interaction.
